Additional Comments

The year was 1902. The production plants that were driving Philadelphia's Industrial Revolution were going in full gear, and the historic commercial district in Old City was now becoming a force in manufacturing.

Old City's proximity to the waterfront and the transportation hub of shipping and rail yards along Delaware Avenue, made it the perfect location for thriving factories. One of those was the Wilbur Chocolate Company, a renowned confectioner whose history dates back to the mid-1800's and was the first name in chocolates, before Hershey was even born!

Wilbur Chocolate Company was located on North Third Street in old city Philadelphia, a stretch that was known as "Confectioner's Row" in the early 1900's, because of the diversity of producers and suppliers who dealt in confectionary products. What distinguished Wilbur from the others was the fact that their manufacturing facility was a complex of industrial buildings, each unique in its own architectural style, but joined together over a period of time to form one imposing facility.

The first building was built in 1902 and successive structures were added through 1919.
The original building was noted for its solid brick and heavy timber construction, and the unique combination of arched and circular porthole windows. The next building was hailed for its handsome Georgian-Revival architectural style, including such details as Doric columns and dentiled cornices. The remaining buildings were constructed in the same flavor, heavy on brick and timber, generous in its use of oversized windows and high ceilings to create bright, expansive spaces for busy manufacturing.

When Historic Landmarks transformed this architectural relic into a first-class residential community in 1983, at a cost of $12 million, great care was taken to preserve the significant design details and enhance them luxurious modern amenities. The exterior features an elaborate forecourt with a charming Victorian-style trellis and unique landscaping. An interior courtyard was fashioned from skeletal steel and timber frames to create a living sculpture and a wonderful viewpoint from the beautiful, glass-walled lobby.

Walk through the labyrinth of brick-walled hallways to the entry doors that are topped with backlit arches, and you'll find the apartments are every bit as extraordinary. Exposed wood beams and ceilings add an air of drama, while the huge sun-catching windows bathe the interiors with light. Many apartments feature decks or balconies with dazzling river or courtyard views. Most residences offer one-of-a-kind design details, such as built-in shelves, breakfast bars, elongated entry hallways, platform or bi-level floorplans...extraordinary style and indulgent features that make living at The Chocolate Works a very sweet life.

Why live in an apartment when you can treat yourself to a landmark... especially a building that blends history with handsome design. Come sample The Chocolate Works...where you can be indulged with all the ingredients you could possibly want!
